Abuja 2003: Tennis Federation Trains Umpires

The Africa Table Tennis Federation is to organise a three-day International Referees course and examination for African International Umpires in order to enhance the quality and standard of officiating of the table tennis event at the 8th All Africa Games.

The International Referees Course which has runs from today till Sunday at the Lungi Barracks, is to be conducted by two foreign instructors, Reto Bazzi from Switzerland and Colin Clemett from England.

They are to tutor four Nigerian International Umpires and 10 others from other parts of the continent.

The Nigerian umpires selected for the course include Booyamni Braimoh, Offiong Ndem, Biodun Aarape, and Adedeji Said.

South Africa, Libya, Kenya, Mauritus, Cameroon, Senegal and Egypt are some of the countries expected to attend the course.

Meanwhile, the draws for the table tennis event of the 8th All Africa Games is scheduled for 6pm local time on Sunday, at Lungi Barracks.

The competition would serve as the 2004 Athens Olympic qualifiers and it would attract about 30 countries that will contest for honours in seven categories. The events are, men's and women's Singles, mixed doubles as well as the men and women's doubles events.

Nigeria´s oil adviser Rilwanu Lukman resigns from post

Nigeria's presidential adviser on oil matters and OPEC´s representative, Rilwanu Lukman, has resigned Wednesday from his post, OPEC's official news agency, Opecna reported Thursday.

Remi Oyo, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's spokeswoman, confirmed Wednesday that Lukman had resigned from his post, reported Dow Jones Newswires on Wednesday and Lukman comfirmed it to OPECNA on Thursday.

"It is true. I have resigned. There is a time to be in, and there is a a time to go. And this is the time to go," Lukman told Opecna by telephone.

Dow Jones reported that in Nigeria's ThisDay newspaper a story said that Lukman had accepted a post as Nigeria's ambassador to the U.S. in Washington.
